EXPIRED DOMAINS

Backorder vs Expired Auction

These two paths occur at different points in a domain's lifecycle and involve different uncertainty.

Expired auction

An expired auction is a marketplace sale associated with a domain whose registration was not renewed. You bid against other participants under the marketplace's rules. The auction may end without a completed transfer under some circumstances, so read the current terms.

Backorder

A backorder asks a service to attempt to acquire a domain if it becomes available. Multiple interested buyers can lead to an auction. A backorder is an attempt, not a reservation or guarantee.

Which should you use?

Compare timing, likelihood of acquisition, total cost, and the marketplace rules. Both require the same domain diligence: name quality, history, backlinks, trademark screening, renewal fee, and likely buyer demand. See expired auctions and backorders.

Domain purchases involve risk. Verify marketplace information and perform independent legal and technical checks.
